Students organized exhibit at Wilmington College with Ruth Brindle

Four students at Wilmington College have curated, designed and installed the interactive exhibit at the Quaker Heritage Center under the direction of Ruth Brindle. “Knick Knacks and Knowledge” features vintage toys from the museum’s permanent collection that are a nostalgic trip down memory lane for many parents and a look into the past for younger visitors.

Visitors roll inflatable dice and move around the exhibit on a life-sized “game board” answering questions that are divided into three levels of difficulty. The exhibit appeals to children of all ages because of the way it was designed for interaction and participation. The Wilmington College students made a conscious decision to exclude electronic toys from the exhibit and focus on handmade, homemade and simple toys such as Lincoln Logs, a farm play set, dolls and paper dolls, a yo-yo, marbles and some board games like Monopoly and Yahtzee.

Some of Ruth’s personal faves include the Farm Play set, and the Holmes stereoscope viewer from the 1880s and a Viewmaster circa 1970s. Both of these toys allowed the user to view something in a new way that had a 3-dimensional quality that reflected the “technology” of the time period.
